adding insult to tragedy

the victorian bushfires are a massive tragedy. over 200 people are dead. the damage is enormous. words cannot express my sadness for the suffering my fellow aussies are going through.

the boston globe’s regular photo essays have covered the bushfires, including some amazing images of the disaster unfolding.

what makes me sick to my stomach, though, is the way some people want to add to the suffering by kicking people when they’re down. so it comes as no surprise that a christian group has made headlines by claiming the bushfires have been caused by victoria’s decision to decriminalise abortion.

what the fuck???

pentacostal retard pastor danny nalliah of the ‘catch the fire ministries’ (a twisted irony) claims he dreamed about the fires late last year. he says that the bushfires are god’s retribution for victoria’s decision to allow women to seek abortions.

i cannot believe that a person in his position would say such a thing. i cannot believe that anyone of religious virtues would further insult people struck by enormous tragedy. yet, despite this, nalliah has stated that he’s sending donations, money, supplies and people to help deal with the disaster.

i’m truly, deeply sorry for the deaths and suffering of so many people. i hope that the government does all it can to help those in need.

i’m also sorry for people who would cash in on such tragedy to call attention to their own personal crusades. i’ve known a few pentacostals in my time and i’m fairly certain of one thing: they’re all complete nutbags. of all the christian sects, pentacostals are amongst the worst.

update: the pentacostal website’s full statement is here. i left a comment, but i doubt they’ll keep it … since it goes against the flow of their righteousness.

you’re kidding right?? this is the most insensitive thing i have ever heard.

so, rather than showing that the church is the bastion of tolerance and virtue, you insult people in their time of need. churches are supposed to support the community, not condemn people amidst enormous tragedy and suffering.

you’re not justifying yourself, you’re grandstanding in the face of human tragedy.

the god i believe in has humility and compassion. no god would think the way you do!

ranger is right to say that statements like this turn people away from the church. nobody wants to hear your crusades. bible thumpers like you give the rest of those with faith a bad name.

i will pray for the victims of this disaster … i will also pray that you realise the magnitude of your own mortal sin: your magnanimous arrogance and pride!

i am deeply ashamed of you.

God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble [James 4:6]
